Arsenal score 6, I score 50

Posted by James Dall on 24, December 2006

Hooray, a victory! Added to the fact that today is my 50th ever blog. How time flies.

While attempting to get my live stream to work yesterday to watch the game I had sky sports on without the volume on, I had to do a double take when I saw we were one nil down, I really could not believe it. After seeing the replay of the supposed foul that lead to the penalty I can safely say the ref got it completely wrong. Anyway – we responded, carving out opportunity after opportunity. Gilberto got us back in it with an excellent header from a corner, he really is in top form this season and I think relishing the captaincy. A mazy run from Hleb after some slick play from Adebayor and we were in front. van Persie was brought down when completely through, from about 8 yards out and was rightly awarded a pen, somehow Neil did not get sent off though – baffling. Adebayor coolly dispatched, 3-1 and then half time. We created many chances following the break, Fabregas missing a couple, Hleb astonishingly adding an extra pass to a move and Rosicky having a shot deflected onto the bar. For all this domination we conceded. This made for a very nervy 5 or 10 minutes in which Lehman made a great save from a Pederson shot. Then finally, after missing a couple of chances van Persie skinned the defender and slotted home, beautiful stuff. It didn’t top there, a cracking move involving Adebayor who slid Fabregas in, who then classically cut back for van Persie. The sixth came right at the end where Fabregas dribbled towards the corner flag, followed by Savage who clearly was out to chop him, unfortunately Fabregas skinned him got into the area shot it was parried and then as the Emirate’s voice over guy announced ‘goal machine’ Flamini passed into the net.

6-2 then, we are all delighted with the result, annoyingly the rest of the top 6 won also. Man United convincingly at Villa and Chelsea unconvincingly at Wigan. I have watched Chelsea’s last two games both which they have won 3-2 and been in very tricky positions and I think to myself if we were 2-1 down away or 2-2 away would we have the power to steal something and right now I think that is what we are lacking. Thierry will be a huge plus once he is back of course, but right now Adebayor and van Perise are doing a fantastic job, my wish is that Wenger stays with the 4-4-2 formation that was used yesterday. Just a little note about Rosicky, who looked excellent.

Henry talks here about how he wants to become an Arsenal legend. He already is one really but if he stays until he retires and wins another title or two with us, added to that the Champions League, I will love him even more. I read something from him the other day where he talked about playing deeper as he gets older, I could not agree more, even when he does lose his pace he will still be highly effective.

Last but certainly not least, Arsene talks about the need for consistency. It really is vital that we put a string of victories together. Imagine if we pick up 4 in total of this xmas period. We would surely leap frog Liverpool or at least create a bit of a gap between 4th and 5th.

Christmas eve of course today. Have a relaxing day everyone, expect a short blog tomorrow.
