A welcome Henry return results in Charlton destruction

Posted by James Dall on 3, January 2007

The main talking point yesterday was of course the return of our captain Thierry Henry. I admit I was surprised by his inclusion and was a little bit concerned that it might come back to haunt us. It did not. He was excellent and more importantly came out of the game unscathed.

We won 4-0 against Pardew’s Charlton. We were more than convincing. After carving out a couple of really decent opportunities, Fabregas shot was deflected onto the bar, van Persie was running in, and stupidly he was pulled down even though he probably would not have got there. A red card for the Chartlon defender and a penalty for us. There was much deliberation of this goal on Sky Sports 1 but to be honest if you are foolish enough to grab the player when he is clean through, offside or not you deserve to concede the foul.

Henry stepped up and calmly buried into the corner. This was followed by a high five with the manager and a little dance with Adebayor. Awesome!

We got our second near the end of the half, Charlton were really on the ropes now and it was more damage limitation for them. Hoyte amazingly, played a 1-2 with Henry (a beautifully weighted ball into Hoyte’s path), then slotted home into the far corner.

2-0 half time and we were cruising. Second half was more of the same, Rosicky hit the post and missed a one on one. We battered them. It really was the most relaxed I have been, while watching Arsenal this season. The third was another penalty, Thierry’s shirt was pulled and he went down. No idea what the defender was thinking. van Persie stepped up for this one and absolutely smashed it home. Gilberto went off for Flamini and Denilson made a late appearance. Aliardiere was on at some point late on but made no impact again. The fourth and final goal was scored by Robin, his second of the game and tenth league goal this season, Flamini slid a pass into him, Robin then waited and then chipped the ball over Carson. Super finish. He really is an awesome player. Thierry acknowldges this too –

He has the ability to be one of the best players in the league. He has matured a lot and he does stuff in training that I have rarely seen before.

I would love to see some of those things that Henry mentions Robin has been doing in training. There is some more from Thierry here, mainly talking about his return and injuries. The boss was obviously delighted and everything he said after can be read here.

Last night really was like having a new signing in the team I thought, his impact was massive and clearly had a huge effect of the team. We are all delighted he is back, and when Adebayor is fit again we have 3 quality strikers competing for 2 positions. Excellent!

A note should go out to Scott Carson, the Charlton goalkeeper, who was immense. If it was not for him we would be be looking at double figures I think.

Player Ratings for Arsenal vs. Charlton –

Lehamn – 6 – very little to do

Hoyte – 7 – good goal but still I am unconvinced

Toure – 6 – just kept things tight, easy evening for him really

Senderos – 6 – seemed assured to me

Clichy – 7 – really impressed with how he got forward

Hleb – 7 – industrious, worked hard and created

Fabregas – 8 – the engine room of our display, could have had a couple of goals

Gilberto – 7 – did the ugly stuff very well

Rosicky – 7 – worked his socks off, could and should have scored

van Persie – 8 – always looked dangerous

Henry – 8 – a great return, almost involved in every attacking move

subs – Flamini – 6 not on for long assist though, Denilson – 6 – little time, Aliardiere – 5 – average

That is it for today, have an excellent Wednesday.
